Key skills:
- a good knowledge of the types and properties of fabrics
- to be able to interpret a design concept and put it on paper
- excellent sewing skills
- to be detail oriented
- good maths skills for measurements and calculations
- to be able to draw freehand
- good computer skills, especially with software design packages.
Key tasks:
- create pattern templates by interpreting drawings produced by a fashion designer
- use computer design software to make up some patterns
- drape, shape and pin fabrics over a dummy
- cut out a pattern based on the shaped fabric pieces
- work with machinists to make up clothing samples based on the pattern
- work with designers to make alterations or adjustments to the final pattern.
